Binding a Pamphlet

Procedure:

Binding a Pamphlet by Hand

Pamphlets come in all shapes and sizes. A "classic" pamphlet consists of a single signature, having, thereby, a center through which its pages are stapled together. It is modest in length and has paper covers. Shown above, are three typical pamphlets.

Note: The process shown below-- of fly sheeting pamphlets and inserting them into taped binders-- is one we no longer use for most of our pamphlets. We are now using tapeless binders which eliminate the need for fly sheeting, etc. However, we still use the method illustrated below for over-sized pamphlets for which there are no tapeless binders available.

We will protect these soft-cover items by putting them into a rigid binder which will also provide easy shelving. The first step is to apply a sheet of acid-free paper to the front and back sides; this is called a "flysheet." Location stamps can be put on the fly sheet, thus helping to preserve the pamphlet cover. We affix the flysheet to the paper cover with a thin bead of glue which is applied to the gutter edge of the cover.

After applying a flysheet to one side, the excess paper which protrudes beyond the pamphlet is sliced off, flush with the pamphlet edges.
