Adding Title Covers

Adding Title Covers to Binders

On some of our bound pamphlets, there are cover labels or titles, as is shown above. These cover illustrations or labels are actually the original, front covers of the pamphlets. We have removed them from the pamphlet and glued them onto the binder into which the pamphlet was bound.

Several conditions must exist before we can even consider removing a cover from the pamphlet:

  1. The title page of the pamphlet closely replicates the cover, including all pertinent information such as: title, author, institutional sponsors, etc.
  2. This front cover has no text or illustrations on its reverse side.
  3. The back cover has no text or illustrations on either side.

Removing a pamphlet cover and gluing it onto the front of a binder adds several more steps to the binding process so it is not feasible to do this for every pamphlet which meets the above conditions.

Generally, we do it only for the following categories of pamphlets:

  1. The original covers are very acidic; removing them can prolong the life of the rest of the pamphlet (illustrated, below).

  2. The original covers are badly torn or dirty and smudged (illustrated below, right).

  3. The pamphlet is thick; removing the covers reduces its thickness just enough to fit it into a binder. This is the only circumstance in which we would remove the cover from a new pamphlet. Examples of thick pamphlets are shown above, left and below.

This pamphlet cover is both thick and dirty.

The steps for adding a title cover to the binder are shown on the next page.
