When books or other items include loose or supplementary items such as plates, maps, charts, illustrations, etc., we put the supplementary item in a pocket and affix it to the book. We can glue the pocket to the inside of one of the book covers or we can hinge the pocket onto the cover so that it is loose and turns like a page.
There are two instances when we use the hinging process. The first is shown, below.
This child's book includes an illustrated, folding chart.
To keep the chart with the book, we place it in a pocket which we need to attach somehow. Since the book's end sheets contain text and illustrations, we do not want to obscure them by gluing the pocket to the cover.
Using self-adhesive linen tape, we apply one length to the pocket
and the back cover.
This piece of tape act as the hinge.
The pocket is now affixed but can also be lifted off of both sides of the back cover.
