Main Library Humanities Hub Team
Minutes
Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Present: Sarah Shreeves, Mark Wardecker, Harriett Green, Marek Sroka, J. P Mathy, Dianne Harris, Kirk Sanders, Sue Searing, John Wagstaff. Jeff Schrader in attendance.

The subject of the meeting was library spaces. Jeff Schrader supplied the following figures, and showed floor plans, for the following spaces:

  1. Classics Library: total space, including the extra rooms across the corridor from 419A, is ca 3095 square feet (the three extra rooms are around 300 square feet each, and 419A is 2375 square feet).
  2. Room 220 (currently occupied by the Cataloging and Metadata department). This is comparable in size to room 225 (the Literatures and Languages Library) but has the advantage of the former Library Billing Office space as well. Therefore 220 is ca 5248 square feet, and room 225 is 4664 square feet.
  3. Room 200 (the second floor main reference room) is 13466 square feet.

In addition to basic matters of space, we also need to consider:

  1. Power and data needs
  2. HVAC issues
  3. Accessibility questions
  4. Lighting

It was noted, in connection with provision of shelving, that a gap of 42” between shelves is currently the code requirement.

Dianne asked whether mobile shelving could be used in, say, 220. Jeff advised that the floors in Main Library aren’t really designed for that kind of load.

Kirk asked how much space – given the code requirements for spacing between shelves – would be required to relocate the current Classics collections.

The Team then visited rooms 220, 200, and the Classics Library with Jeff.

John is to invite Tom Teper to the Team’s meeting on October 17 to discuss Stacks and other relevant issues. We will begin the meeting by talking about Scholarly Commons and Digital Humanities issues.
