Critical Trends Assessment Program (CTAP) Bibliography

Documents from the Illinois Critical Trends Assessment Program and Conservation 2000. Includes the Area Assessments and resource inventory brochures for the 33 Illinois regions, land cover mapping project reports, general CTAP program reports, and EcoWatch documents.  UI call numbers and links to catalog records are provided. Most documents are held in the INHS Library.

Publications (peer-reviewed and popular articles, books, book chapters, and conference proceedings and presentations) by and about INHS researchers from 1870 to the present. Many reprints through the 1980s are available in the INHS Library for in-house use.  Most items are included in UIUC Library print or online collections; use the Discover buttons to locate full text or print copies in the UIUC Library. INHS Technical Reports RSS feed button

INHS Technical Reports are authored by INHS scientists for the purpose of documenting the status, stewardship, conservation, and restoration of Illinois' biotic resources. The reports are used by INHS, the Department of Natural Resources, and various granting agencies to assess needs and formulate policy. Reports may originate from any of the INHS centers and field stations. The collection comprises more than 1500 reports as of July 2009, and most are owned only by the INHS Library. Copies are kept at the INHS Library and are available for in-house use, with a few exceptions. More than 300 reports have been cataloged and are available for request/check out via the UI Library catalog or via I-Share. Records for cataloged items include call numbers and links to catalog records. The INHS Human Dimensions Program reports are available online, and database records provide links to online reports when available. Updated semi-annually. Also see,


Illinois Flora Database

1,275 citations from Bibliography of Illinois Vegetation by Paul Risser (1984), published as INHS Biological Note no. 121. Covers the literature describing the plant communities throughout Illinois from the ~100 years prior to publication. Not updated. Illinois Nature Preserves Commission Files

The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission (INPC) assists public and private landowners in protecting high quality habitats through voluntary dedication or registrations of land.  Species lists and other data on preserves are held in the INHS Library, filed alphabetically by county and natural area or preserve name.  INHS researchers have added to the original data.  Also see:


Illinois Survey Field Notes Collection

Surveyor field notes from the early 19th century describe habitats and landscape features, and can be used to determine pre-settlement vegetation.  On microfilm, available for in-house use in the INHS Library.  (Field notes correspond to the Illinois Township Plats created ca. 1850.)  


Illinois Wetlands Inventory Map Collection

Locations and classifications of the state's wetlands, lakes, and rivers on topographical maps.  Arranged alphabetically by quadrangle name, with an index to quadrangles provided.  Available for in-house use in the INHS Library.


Index Kewensis version 2.0

Index Kewensis is an alphabetical listing of plant names and includes the bibliographic references to the place of first publication. Covers 1883 - 1996.

Sanderson Wildlife Reprint Collection

More than 8,500 documents on wildlife ecology and management including both grey and published literature from the early 1970s through 1999.  Subject and author indexes index additional related documents dating back as far as 1931.  Available for in-house use in the INHS Library.
