Music Cataloging at UIUC processes the original and copy-cataloging of current acquisitions and some gift materials in all formats except serials. (Serials cataloging is performed by the Serials Cataloging Team of the Technical Services Division at the Main Library.) In 1999 the Music Library began a long-term retrospective conversion project that will ultimately result in all of the card-catalog bibliographic records being converted to electronic form. In addition, all materials that had been classed in Dewey will be re-classed in LC. Bibliographic maintenance for the music collection is handled electronically at the Music Library.

The music cataloging staff use a wide range of electronic and print music cataloging tools including the Library of Congress Cataloger's Desktop. The following web sites are used in our work and will provide visitors to this web site with an overview of our tools. Viewers of this web site might wish to consult the document Understanding MARC Standards for an explication of how bibliographic records are coded in our Voyager on-line catalog.
