Gabriel Magyar donation of Dvorak, Mandel-Merel, and Amely Heller items

Music and Performing Arts Library Special Collections, Collections File folder ("Magyar, Gabriel"), and Sousa Archives and Center for American Music

Gift of Gabriel Magyar, retired faculty member of the School of Music

When acquired

Prof. Magyar donated a piano-vocal score of A. Dvorak's Stabat Mater (see below), which includes a dedication in Dvorak's hand to his friend, J. Mandel-Merei. Magyar received this score from Mandel-Merei's daughter, Sarolta Merei, who had been studying music at the Royal Hungarian Franz Liszt Conservatory at the same time as Prof. Magyar. Along with the score, Magyar submitted a photograph of J. Mandel-Merei, an autographed portrait of the violinist Amely Heller, and a copy of Heller's book, H.W. Ernst: Im Urteile seiner Zeitgenossen (see below), along with several letters and a clipping from the period 1905-7.

Magyar's collection of Mandel-Merei materials can be found in Series 1, Box 1, Folder 11 of the  Music and Performing Arts Library Small Special Collections, 1911-1981 Finding Aid.  The Stabat Mater score with Dvorak's signature can be found in Series 1, Box 5.
