There are no public parking facilities for Altgeld Hall. However, limited parking is
available on Wright Street and along John and 6th streets. Additionally, a metered public parking
facility is located at Green and 6th Streets.
Although only current faculty, students, staff, and others with valid University of Illinois
I.D. or library cards may check items out from the library, the Mathematics Library is open to all
for research and browsing. It is possible for persons not affiliated with the University to obtain
library cards;
click here for information on how
to obtain a courtesy card for University of Illinois libraries. All library users are welcome to
ask reference questions or otherwise utilize reference services, though current faculty, students,
and staff are given priority when the reference desk is busy.
The entrance to the stacks is located behind the circulation desk (Map A-2), and anyone can browse them. Books
and bound journals are intershelved and arranged in call number order, starting in the northeast
corner of the upper level.
Map C provides a detailed listing of how
materials are arranged on each floor according to call number. For security reasons, please leave
your briefcase, backpack, etc on the black metal shelves by the grandfather clock before
entering.
There is a United States Post Office in Altgeld, though due to the internal layout of the
building, finding it can be difficult. The easiest way to get to it is to find the two blue mail
boxes outside of Altgeld Hall on Wright Street. If you are already in Altgeld, exit the building at
the main entraince on Green Street and turn left; turn left again onto Wright and look for the
large blue mail box. Just behind the mail box is a door into the building; if you enter this door,
you will walk right into the post office.
The Mathematics Library does not keep change on hand, nor is there a change machine in Altgeld. Your best option is to try the vending machines in the Post Office or the Vending Room or shops in the Illini Union.
