This biographical encyclopedia contains signed articles on known and lesser known historical figures in Germany since its beginnings to 1900.(Literary figures are included as well.) It is important to use the index since some entries are contained in the supplements and not the main text.

Historischen Kommission bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Neue deutsche Biographie, (17. Bände). Berlin: Duncker and Humblot, 1953+.

This biographical encyclopedia is the revised and reworked edition of the Allgemeine deutsche Biographie. It does not supersede the previous work since it omits some previously included articles. However, it contains some new articles on individuals who were previously omitted from the work and it contains articles on persons who have died since the publication of the original work. Thus far only 17 volumes have been completed (Aachen-Moller), and an index for the work does not yet exist. However each individual volume contains an index for its contents.

John, Johannes. Reclams Zitaten-Lexikon. Stuttgart : P. Reclam, 2002.

This quotation index contains quotes from classical times to the present. It is alphabetized by the first important concept in each quote. The source of each quote is cited, but not thoroughly. There is only an Autorenregister, so it is somewhat difficult to find quotes related to a particular topic. There is no cross-referencing.

Duden Zitate und Ausspruche. Mannheim: Dudenverlag, 2002.

This one volume work is divided into two parts and covers quotations since classical times to modern times (post WWII). Unfortunately there is no cross-referencing from section 1 to section 2 or vice versa. Thus, the organization of this work suffers somewhat.
