Mercantile, Anthony S. & James R. Dow, eds. The Facts on File Encyclopedia of World Mythology and Legend. 2nd Ed. New York: Facts on File, Inc., 2004.

From Absalom to Zarathustra, this second edition of a standard reference work covers a wide range of concepts and characters from myths of many traditions. Expanded to two volumes with many entries reflecting new scholarship, it has an updated, well-annotated bibliography divided into general and specific collections of tales as well as an excellent cultural and ethnic index to aid research into the myriad cultures represented. (School Library Journal, Spring 2005 Supplement, Vol. 51)

398.21091812 Ox24 (Mod. Ling. & Lang. Ref.)
Zipes, Jack David, ed. The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000.

An excellent source--and good place to begun--for anyone interested in "literary fairy tales" from Antiquity to the present. The editor defines the literary fairy tale broadly as any tale that has been preserved in writing and is commonly assumed to be a fairy tale. In his lengthy introduction he defines the tale and surveys its long history. The encyclopedia consists of entries of authors, titles, and themes. Included are many illustrations and an extensive bibliography.

Germany

398.203 Sc28m, vol. 1 and 2
Scherf, Walter. Das Märchenlexikon. Munich: Verlag C. H. Beck, 1995.

This double volume set collects together over 500 German folktales along with similar examples from other countries. The entries are in German and arranged alphabetically by title (original title for non-German examples are included in discussion). Each entry is divided into four areas: 1. history of publication (including the manuscript tradition); 2. version of the tale; 3. brief discussion of major themes and plot structure and relationship of the tale to related ones; and 4. select bibliography. Students of German folk literature and those interested in tracing the development of certain themes and plot lines among folktales of different regions will find this an invaluable source.
