News & Announcements from Units:

You are invited to a forum on Virtual Reference, July 9, 2:00-3:30pm in 509 ACES.

David Ward (UGL) and Kathleen Kern (Reference) will lead a discussion about Virtual Reference at UIUC, focusing on our online chat reference service.

They will offer an overview of virtual reference: how the software works, who the patrons are, and how Undergrad and Reference use online chat to answer questions; discuss how your library might become involved in the chat reference service; and Undergrad and Reference will share some of their stories and statistics about their 2.5 year old service. Please join them on July 9 for this forum.

The Illini Union Browsing Room was tucked in the Northwest Corner of the Illini Union for over thirty-nine years. It officially opened on February 8, 1941, and closed its doors permanently on June 13, 2003 at 5:00pm. It was originally located in what is now the President's Lounge. The initial collection consisted of 1,182 books and one periodical title, (Fortune), circulation of materials was not permitted. Circulation of the book collection was introduced on September 10, 1951. On June 12, 1964, the Browsing Room was moved to its present location, previously known as the Wedgewood Lounge. The area of the room, 1,823 square feet, is double the size of the original location. The collection increased substantially over the years to exceed 4,000 books and 50 magazine titles. It was a long tradition here on the University Campus, and will be missed. In honor of the room, the Undergraduate Library will soon be posting a web site where individuals can look at the library as it existed.
