Findings from Assession ILL/DD Study Released to Participants

In late September, the 72 libraries participating in the latest ARL ILL/DD study received their individual institutional reports. The reports included unit cost, fill rate, and turnaround time for mediated ILL/DD services and six user-initiated services INNReach, URSA, Loansome Doc, ILLINET Online, RAPID, and user-initiated use of commercial document delivery suppliers. In addition, the project collected data on the performance of local document delivery services in 25 of the participating ARL, academic, and special libraries. The study confirmed that user-initiated services have lower unit costs, higher fill rates, and faster turnaround times than mediated ILL/DD services. For example, the borrowing unit cost for one of the user-initiated services was $2.04, compared to $17.50 for mediated borrowing in ARL libraries. ARL will identify the characteristics of the most cost-effective interlibrary borrowing and lending operations and showcase good practices that could benefit other libraries through a printed publication and series of workshops. There will be a briefing on the initial findings for ARL directors at the October ARL Membership Meeting. For more information contact Mary Jackson, mary@arl.org.

OLMS Library Leadership for New Managers Program is a Success

In September, 30 participants from academic and research libraries around North America met in Washington, D.C. to explore some of the most critical issues in library leadership. Presentations and discussions ranged from collaborating effectively with information technology professionals to exercising influence in a collegial environment. Feedback from participants indicates that the leadership institute was a success; it has been described as "thought-provoking and motivating", "excellent & practical", and "energizing & stimulating." This marks completion of the first phase of the Library Leadership for New Managers program. Participants will begin the Online Lyceum course "Motivation, Performance, and Commitment" in October and, in November, will submit reports on learning projects carried out at their home libraries.

SPARC Highlights

SPARC has announced a partnership with Labor Studies in Working Class History in the Americas, a new journal founded by the entire editorial board of Labor History, a commercial title owned by Taylor and Francis. As SPARC’s first partnership in the humanities, the alliance with Labor broadens SPARC's reach into another field plagued by disproportionate prices for commercial journals and a lack of competitive alternatives. The Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Oxford University Press, and the Company of Biologists are the most recent organizations to issue statements supporting open access methods of publication. The Wellcome Trust's position statement and supporting documents mention SPARC's efforts on behalf of open access throughout.
