Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
UIUC
Full text articles from some prominent newspapers in French, Dutch, German, Italian, and
Spanish can be retrieved through this database In two ways. One way is to enter searches in these
languages (English operators [and, or, not] must be used to combine search terms). Another way is
to use the Guided News Search. Under Step One, select "Non-English Language News" and Under Step
Two, chose a language. Diacritic marks should be ignored, except in German, where "E" must
follow all vowels with an umlaut.
EbscoHost Newspaper Source
UIUC
EBSCO Newspaper Source provides selected full text coverage for 238 sources, including 175
regional U.S. newspapers, 20 international newspapers, 15 newswires and newspaper columns, as well
as 24 TV and radio news transcripts. This collection also includes cover-to-cover full text for USA
Today, The Christian Science Monitor and The Los Angeles Times. Newswire coverage includes
Associated Press Online, Asia Pulse, Canadian Press Wire, AP Worldstream and more. Full text
transcripts are also included from Face the Nation, CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, 60 Minutes,
OReilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes, CNN, CNBC, etc.
BPI-DOC online
index WWW
BPI-Doc is an online index of about 100 French newspapers and magazines published since Jan.
1, 1997. No full text is given, but there are full citations. The index is searchable by keywords
or by advanced searches using journal names and/or dates of publication.
Proquest Historical Newspapers
UIUC
Proquest Historical Newspapers contains two historical resources: New York Times (Sept
18,1851-Dec 31, 2001), and Wall Street Journal (July 8, 1889-Dec 31, 1987). Users have the option
of searching all newspapers or individual ones.
Center for Research Library's
Foreign Newspapers
and
Ethnic Press (for
North American Ethnic Newspapers)
The Center for Research Libraries holds a rich collection of foreign-language and North
American Ethnic newspapers on microfilm. Search CRL's newspaper databases to find
holdings--searching by city rather than title is more effective--and then request the material
through the UIUC Library's
Interlibrary Loan, stating in the Notes field that
the item is available through CRL.
Ethnic
NewsWatch UIUC
Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the
ethnic, minority and native press. A rich collection of articles, editorials, columns, reviews,
etc. provide a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints -- the other sides of the stories.
Free text searching and complete indexing makes Ethnic NewsWatch easy to search. The content of
this collection is useful for Caribbean, African, and Arab/Middle Eastern studies; however,
French-language sources do not appear to be included.
UIUC Library Newspaper Database
This section provides links to the commercial websites of international and domestic/regional newspapers that are available without a subscription. Further links to online newspapers from around the world are found through Newslink.com, which organizes them by continent. The response times and transmission delays for these newspaper sites vary widely.
Another option for international newspapers is to search for them via Access World News. You can click on the region of interest to you for titles of newspapers from that area.
OnlineNewspapers French
This site links to dozens of French newspapers, including a few papers in English.
NewsLink's France online newspapers
Links to about 20 French newspapers.
Metro International--France

readers of 25 editions in 16 countries in 14 languages, with a high number of readers per copy, at
2.6. The newspaper can be read in a 16.7-minute commute, and is typically read by a 50% female
readership. 38% of people under 30 years of age in distribution areas read
Metro at least once a week. The online version is free, though users must register.
Le Monde-diplomatique (Paris)
Although this paper offers only a monthly edition, it contains a rather detailed subject
index which can be of use in finding articles on specific topics.
Le Nouvel Observateur quotidien
Le Parisien (Paris)
This paper covers Paris proper and the surrounding regions, for which there are separate
editions. One week of back issues is available, and it is possible to search the site for a
particular word.

Articles from Agence France Presse are available, and there is a special section on university
news. Previous issues are not available.
La Voix du Nord
Covers in separate editions the area from Calais and Dunkerque to Cambrai and Valenciennes,
with a special focus on the large metropolitan area of Lille. This is truly a regional paper, since
national and international news are not included. No archived issues are provided.
Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (Strasbourg)
Good coverage of local, national, and international news, with the possibility of reading
some articles in either French or German. Many entertainment topics have rubrics as well, with
sports occupying a prominent place. The site includes a searchable archive of back issues.

From the home page, click on the newspaper icon to reach the paper. Departments near Metz
and Luxembourg are covered in separate editions. Two years of searchable back issues.

Coverage not only of Nice itself, but of the whole region, including Corsica. Some national
and international news, but no back issues. It is possible to view the front pages in .pdf
format.
Sud Ouest
Regional paper for southwestern France, with particular focus on Bordeaux. However, national
and international news is also included, along with sports and entertainment. One week of back
issues may be consulted. (A more extensive
Centre de documentation is available but requires payment.)
See NewsLink's Belgium online newspapers.
Tageblatt
Daily edition covering Luxembourg, Europe and the world. Despite its title, this newspaper
is written in French. The archives contain selected articles rather than complete back issues.
See also NewsLink's Québec online newspapers.
Le Soleil du Québec
A good number of rubrics, but each contains only a few relatively short articles. Coverage
primarily of the province of Québec, with international news coming from Agence France Presse and
the Associated Press. Only selected articles from back issues are available.
Below is a list of the library's popular magazines about French literature and culture. Check the Online Journals & Databases to find complete online holdings.
