The Music and Performing Arts Library (MPAL) collects materials within most fields of musical performance, music education, musicology, music theory, and composition. It also has extensive holdings in dance and theatre. MPAL is one of the largest music and performing arts libraries at a public university, and its music holdings are currently ranked very highly among music libraries in the United States and worldwide. Its collections contain more than 765,000 volumes, including over 55,000 books, 520,000 scores, 19,000 microforms, 150,000 sound recordings, and over 20,000 items in other formats and media. Most materials in MPAL circulate and there are also listening rooms and equipment available for in-house use of all media formats in the collection (ranging from LPs to streaming audio and video).
