After quite a bit of effort, I wrote a plugin for TinyMCE which will replace the current "Insert Image" button. It integrates with OpenCMS and allows browsing of the CMS filesystem. This plugin relies on a feature of OpenCMS called "Extended Folders," specifically the "Image Gallery" folder in this case. I hope to add screenshots to this soon to make it easier to follow, but I don't quite have the time yet.
Extended folders work just the same as normal folders, but they also act as repositories of specific types of files (images in this case), so they are easier for other components in OpenCMS to access. By placing images into an "Image Gallery' folder, it allows others to use those images easily. This encourages people to reutilize other images already present in the CMS. This helps prevent massive duplication and exposes web page creators to the effort others have already made.
To create a "Gallery Image" folder, click on "New"
Select "Extended Folder" and then choose "Image Gallery." You can either upload or move image into this new directory now, or you can upload new images through an interface in the editor.
If you're using TinyMCE and you want to insert an image, just click on the "Edit/Insert Image"
button. The Image Gallery interface will open.
