Infrastructure and Software Development
Overview
The IT ISD group works primarily in four areas:
- Providing and managing networked server and storage environments comprising the infrastructure for IT applications & services
- Developing software and databases; installing, maintaining, and integrating locally developed and third-party software for production library environments
- Providing 3rd tier (advanced) support for the tools and applications that we have created and/or deployed
- Project management
IT Infrastructure & Systems Architecture
- Data center - Server hardware, operating systems, and virtual machines
- Server systems administration, monitoring, and security
- Networked systems design
- SQL database administration (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, & Oracle)
- Data storage systems and backups
- IT disaster preparedness
Software & Database Development
- Custom application development (most often databases with web-based interfaces). We code in SQL, PHP, Perl, Java, Ruby, and VB. We still support some old applications in VBScript/ASP and Visual C.
- Customization & integration of third-party software
- Database design & consulting
- Software issue/feature tracking
- Software code repositories (SVN)
User Support
- We collaborate with the IT Help Desk and the IT Workstation & Networking Support units to provide services, so we are often involved in resolving support questions.
- Our staff occasionally provide training to Library employees.
- We provide technology workflow consulting.
Project Management
Two of us are also certified Project Management Professionals (PMP) and are working on applying and sharing formal PM knowledge and practices in the Library.
