From Voyager 6 to Voyager 7 : Important Differences in Item Level and Canned Search links

The link structure for Voyager 7 (tomcat version) is changing for all item level and "canned search" links from the format for Voyager 6. CARLI has done their best to ensure that direct links to the catalog using the older Voyager 6 syntax will get redirected to the proper URL in Voyager 7, but can't guarantee that this will work in every situation.

Minimally, after the Voyager 7 upgrade, you should make sure you use the new Voayager 7 link style whenever you are publishing or emailing direct links to the catalog.  It is also preferable that you update direct links on any of your existing web pages to use the new syntax at your earliest possible convenience. Please do not update your old links until after the Voyager 7 upgrade. If you update your links before the upgrade, they will not work until the upgrade.

Does This Change Affect Me?

This change will affect you if you have created or maintain pages the include links to items, (canned) searches, advanced search screens, or account management pages within any of of the CARLI Voyager library catalogs, including the University of Illinois Library Catalog.Check back on this page in the next few days for a count of the number of web pages on the www.library.illinois.edu domain that have these types of links.

Direct Links

In Voyager 6, a direct link to an item using it's BBID in the University of Illinois Library is in the format:

https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uiu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?bbid=5738859

in Voyager 7, the same link by BBID takes the format

https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uiu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=5738859

The changes for BBID links are fairly minor, the only changes being the name of a directory (cgi-bin becomes vwebv) and the page that process the request (Pwebrecon.cgi becomes holdingsInfo).

Canned Search Links

Links to preset (or "canned") searches will also require a new format.

In Voyager 6, a canned advanced search for the University of Illinois Library Catalog takes a format similar to (expect small variations in links, based on search type, options selected, etc):

https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uiu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?SAB1=black+hole&BOOL1=as+a+phrase&FLD1=Title+Words+(TKEY)&GRP1=AND+with+next+set&SAB2=physics&BOOL2=as+a+phrase&FLD2=Any+Words+(GKEY)&GRP2=AND+with+next+set&SAB3=&BOOL3=any+of+these&FLD3=Any+Words+(GKEY)&CNT=20&HIST=1

in Voyager 7, the same link takes the format

https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/uiu/vwebv/search?sk=en_US&searchArg1=black+hole&argType1=phrase&searchCode1=TKEY&combine2=and&searchArg2=physics&argType2=phrase&searchCode2=GKEY&combine3=and&searchArg3=&argType3=any&searchCode3=GKEY&recCount=20&searchType=2

As you can see, the changes to the link structure for canned searches are more significant. Because of this, you'll  need to make sure to test any canned search links you update (either by hand or using the CARLI tool).
