Large Screen Monitor in Room 225

Why is there a large screen monitor in Room 225?

Room 225 (aka the Slavic Conference Room) has a 42" Samsung screen monitor which can be used with a laptop to do group presentations, instead of using a projector and screen.  Library IT recommends using a Fujitsu laptop from the Library IT Loaner Pool with the large screen monitor.   As always, be sure to reserve a laptop from the Loaner Pool well ahead of time so it will be available when you need it.  The instructions below explain how to connect the Fujitsu to the monitor.

Note: If you choose to use another type of laptop with the large screen monitor, be sure to check with staff in the IT Workstation & Network Support unit (IT/WNS) well in advance for advice on the type of adapter you need to have in order to connect your laptop to the monitor.  Library IT does not keep adapters for other laptops in stock and does not purchase them.   For a DVI connection, use the cable with the WHITE end dangling from the monitor and change the source settings to DVI instead of PC. The FN key sequence should be set based on your specific equipment configuration.

Connecting a Fujitsu laptop to the large screen monitor

1.      Connect the VGA cable (the cable with the BLUE end dangling from the monitor) into the VGA port on the laptop. Power on the monitor. Power on the laptop and log in.

Open the plastic flap on the rear of the laptop to reveal the VGA port located between the power port and the USB port.

The laptop (if logged in) will automatically discover the VGA source and you should see a solid blue screen on the monitor. If the monitor is still blank/black, check that the source of the monitor is properly set. On the underside of the right corner on the monitor are buttons, one of which will be labeled "source". Push this button until you scroll through to the "PC" setting on the monitor.

2.       On the laptop, right-click the desktop (any blue area that is not an icon) and chose "Properties". When the "Display Properties" window appears, choose the "Settings" tab. You will see a large gray box with two boxes representing monitors labeled "1" and "2". Click on the box labeled "2" and then UNCHECK the box next to "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" and click "OK".  See Fig 1.

3.       On the laptop keyboard, hold down the "FN" key in the lower left corner while hitting the F10 key. You will probably need to hit F10 twice to get the display/desktop to show on both the laptop and the monitor. Each time you hit the F10 key you change the display output on the laptop. There are three possibilities. 1) Laptop display only. 2) Laptop and Monitor display.  3) Monitor display only.
Follow the sequence listed above until you find your preferred setting. You should take care not to hit the F10 key too quickly as the monitor takes a few seconds to change according to the signal it receives from the laptop.
