Users see small Discover buttons or links in a wide variety of online resources licensed or managed by the UIUC Library. The button usually looks like this:
Discover provides direct links from a database citation to the full text of the article (if available) and/or other supporting resources. Discover is based on the OpenURL linking standard and Ex Libris' SFX software.
The Discover public interface is normally available 24/7.
Maintaining the Discover public interface is a critical priority for Library IT. We make every effort to resolve problems with this service as quickly as possible.
Problems with individual databases and other specific information resources listed in the Discover Public Interface are dealt with during normal business hours by the Library's Electronic Resources Support.
If the Discover public interface is down or not responding to search requests, please log a ticket with the IT Help Desk or call the Help Desk at 244-4688. Incoming tickets and calls are reviewed and prioritized as they arrive between 8:30-5:00, Monday through Friday.
If it is outside normal business hours (8:30-5:00, Monday through Friday) and you believe there is a widespread outage, please call 244-4688 and leave a message with the Library IT Help Desk answering service (aka the AITS Service Desk). In an emergency situation the answering service will contact Library IT on-call support staff promptly.
If the Discover public interface is running but you cannot connect to specific individual information resources , email the Library's Electronic Resources Management Working Group to report the problem or use the feedback links provided within the Online Journals and Newspapers public interface.
The Discover service publicly accessible to users worldwide. However, in order to obtain the full text the users need to be currently affiliated with the university.
The primary Service Manager is Wendy Shelburne in the Acquisitions Unit.
IT Infrastructure and Software Development hosts the Discover servers and manages the underlying database and software.
The Library's Content Access Management (CAM) unit and the Acquisitions Unit are responsible for managing Discover data records and troubleshooting user access problems.
