The PIE ( is a web publishing tool for all faculty, students, and staff to quickly and easily build a web site without resorting to off-campus services. It uses WordPress which is the largest blogging system in the world.

Citation Management Software (RefWorks)

RefWorks is a citation management software program, paid for by the University Library and offered free to faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois. RefWorks collects, stores, and organizes citations from books, articles, web sites, and other sources.

RefShare is a feature of RefWorks. It is a convenient way to share your bibliography of citations with students, faculty, or colleagues -- no matter where they're located.

Course Management (Illinois Compass 2g)

Illinois Compass 2g is an enterprise learning management system powered by Blackboard's Learn platform. It gives faculty, instructors, students, and others a collaborative online space with tools for managing course content.

File Sharing and Storage (Box)

Use the University of Illinois Box to store, share, and collaborate on documents. Box offers a user-friendly web interface and enterprise security suitable for most files, including FERPA protected data. The University provides a free 50GB account for all current U of I faculty, staff, and students.

Images (Campus Images Database)

Image Database offers consistent, quality images for use in the promotion of the Illinois campus and programs.

Online Technology Training ( offers training on leading software topics including Adobe, Apple, Microsoft products, and audio/video editing, etc.

PowerPoint Templates (Campus)

Although their use is not mandatory, the University PowerPoint Templates help campus communicators create professional presentations that consistently represent the campus to internal and external audiences.

Software/Hardware (U of I WebStore)

The U of I WebStore makes University site-license discounted software available to faculty, staff and students. It offers over 350 software titles for purchase or download.

It also provides free software to individuals for personally-owned computers, including:

    -- McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (for Windows)
    -- McAfee Security (for Mac)

Telecommunications (Lync/Skype for Business)

Lync/Skype for Business is a software on your computer that handles your university phone services. As part of the Unified Communications system, Microsoft Lync offers telephone-like voice communications, instant messaging, video conferencing, contact management, and more.

URL Shortening (TinyURL / Short URL)

Short URL is a University provided tool inside the Web Services Toolbox (Webtools) to shorten URLs using the domain.

TinyURL is a website used to shorten URLs.

Web Development Toolbox (Webtools)

Webtools is a free toolbox provided by the Web Services at UI Public Affairs. It helps a web developer create an online service without substantial programming knowledge. The toolbox includes form builders, event calendars, URL shortening and more.

Wiki (CITES Wiki)

The CITES Wiki is an enterprise knowledge management system which allows users to add, modify, or delete content using a simplified markup language and/or a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor.

Images (Library Photostream)

Library Photostream is created and maintained via a library-wide Flickr Pro account. All images uploaded to this account can be used by any library faculty, staff, or student employee for purposes related to library facilities, resources, services, events or publicity.

Powerpoint Templates (Library)

Library Powerpoint Templates is a collection of PowerPoint templates specific to the University Library.

Professional Development (WebJunction Illinois)

WebJunction Illinois is an online learning tool that Illinois library staff can use to learn about library management, technology and services. It is a service offered through OCLC and all courses are paid by the Illinois State Library.

Screencasting Software (Camtasia)

Camtasia is video-based screen capture software for Windows PCs. Screen captures are recorded to a digital video format. Audio narration can be added to accompany the video. Camtasia can be used to create tutorials, demonstrations, web site tours, etc. aimed at either Library users or Library staff.

Statistics and Reporting Tools

Desk Tracker is a web-based tool used to collect statistics by public service units during Library Sweeps weeks.

Informational Literacy Instructional Statistics is a tool for librarians to collect statistics of the information literacy classes and generate reports as needed.

Subject Resource Guides (LibGuides)

LibGuides is a tool for librarians to create easily searchable and readable subject guides. Patrons can also located LibGuides through Primo and Easy Search.

Telecommunications (Skype)

Skype is a software application for Windows PCs that can be used to make free Internet-based phone and video calls to other computers with Skype installed on them. It can be installed on Library staff workstations (Windows only) for Skype-to-Skype communication about Library-related matters by request.

Voyager Report Generator (Bean Counter)

Bean Counter is a reporting system that is being developed by the Library IT for the University Library. Bean Counter can be used to generate reports from multiple Library databases, including Voyager, the Library's Instructional Statistics, and Web logs, etc.

Web Content Management (OpenCMS)

OpenCMS is the Library's content management system. This centralized system allows departments to create and maintain websites using predetermined templates and styles.

Web Logs & Statistics is a tool that can be used to view the daily, weekly or monthly traffic of library departmental websites or specific webpages.
