Scope and Contents of the Materials

Henry Richard Mozley, of Dudleyville, Tallapoosa County, Ala., was a private in Co. K, 47th Ala.  He served in Virginia and Maryland from 1862 until his death in Apr. 1863.

The collection contains photocopies of Mozley's letters to his wife Jane and their five children.  The correspondence mainly focuses on family affairs, but Mozley also describes a battlefield after the Seven Days' Battle and shares a "Yankee" prisoner's views on the length of the war.  Mozley's death from pleurisy at Springhill Hospital in Farmville, Va., is described in two letters to his widow from John T. Sharpe, a hospital ward master.

Vivian H. Flexman, Mozley's great-granddaughter, loaned these letters to the Library for photocopying in 1976. She also supplied extracts and summaries of the letters, many copies of which are almost illegible.
