Scope and Contents: This collection contains research material collected by Lavern Marshall Hamand in the course of preparing his dissertation on "Ward Hill Lamon: Lincoln's 'Particular Friend,'" (University of Illinois, 1949). It also contains correspondence received by Clint Clay Tilton, an earlier Lamon biographer, and papers relating to the publication of J. G. Randall, Living with Lincoln and Other Essays (1949).
From 1949 to 1957, Hamand was assistant dean and professor of History at Arkansas Polytechnic College in Russellville, Ark. From 1957 to 1982, he taught in the Department of History of Eastern Illinois University, and was the first dean of the Graduate School there. Eastern's Hamand Society Scholars, the Hamand Graduate Writing Award, and the Lavern M. and Martha T. Hamand Scholarship were named in honor of him and his wife..
Wendy Hamand Venet, the Hamand's daughter, donated the collection to the University of Illinois Library in 2011.
