David Davis, of Bloomington, Ill., served as 8th Circuit Court Judge, 1848-62, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, 1862-77, and U.S. Senator, 1877-83. Correspondents in this collection include Judge Thomas Drummond, Ward Hill Lamon, Gen. William Orme, Leonard Swett, and John Wentworth. The letters discuss political issues, court appointments, and various court cases. Ten telegrams concerning the Liberal-Republican nomination of 1872 are also included.
This collection contains typescripts from various David Davis collections, evidently prepared by Harry E. Pratt for his study, "David Davis, 1815-1886" (Ph.D. diss., Univ. of Ill. 1930).
