Scope and Contents:
This collection contains transcripts of two journals kept by members of the Gilbert family, of Vermilion Co., Ill. The first journal is a 15-page account of Mary Morse Gilbert's 1839 trip to Ohio which discusses relatives, sickness, church meetings, and the weather. The second journal is a 17-page description of James H. Gilbert's 1839-40 trip to Texas, which discusses slavery, Mexicans, the landscape, and the standard of living in Texas. The collection also contains genealogical data on the Gilbert family.
Jean G. Wilson, of Urbana, Ill., loaned the transcripts to the Survey for photocopying in 1974.
