Scope and Contents: Born in England in 1836, Samuel Roughton moved to Illinois in 1855, eventually settling in Urbana. Roughton's family resided in Urbana for many years, with his eldest son, William H. Roughton, serving as an Urbana police officer, Urbana Chief of Police, and Urbana Fire Chief in the early twentieth century.
The collection contains photographs of the Roughton and associated Carver and Cramer families, most of which were taken in Champaign-Urbana. All but eleven of the photographs are unidentified, but many appear to have been taken between 1890 and 1920, with three items apparently dating from the 1950s.
Mrs. Thomas Booher of Urbana donated the photographs to the Library in 1970.
