On Feb. 17, 1820, Philo P. Hubbell was commissioned a lieutenant of the militia company of Steuben County, New York. Hubbell's commission, which was issued during the administration of Gov. DeWitt Clinton, was recorded in Bath, N.Y. on June 15, 1820. The Library evidently acquired the document in 1986.
Also in 1820, Hubbell was initiated into the Masonic Lodge of Painted Post, N.Y., where for many years he was a hotel proprietor and postmaster. In 1847, he moved to Corning, N.Y., went into business and again became a postmaster. In 1856, he moved from these Steuben County communities to Winona, Minn.
