Scope and Contents: This collection contains 22 letters from Frederick Jackson Turner to Clarence Walworth Alvord, 1908-16, and 8 letters (carbons) from Alvord to Turner relating to details of their research and their involvement in the American Historical Association.
The collection also contains a typed list of publications in the field of early Western history, with Turner's handwritten comments on the value of each; a copy of The Harvard Bulletin (Nov. 17, 1909) with an article on Turner's move from the University of Wisconsin to Harvard; and an offprint from the American Journal of Sociology (Mar. 1908) of Turner's article, "Is Sectionalism in America Dying Away?" Alvord in this period was in the History faculty at the University of Illinois and in charge of the Illinois Historical Survey.
Also included are two letters, 1929-31, from Turner to William S. Robertson, who was a professor of History at the University of Illinois.
