Scope and Contents: John Raum, born in Hummelstown, Pa., moved to Shawneetown, Ill., in 1823, and settled in Golconda, Ill., in 1826. He served as a brigade major in the Black Hawk War, was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1834, and for 35 years was the county clerk of Pope County.
This collection contains three letters to Raum from John Reynolds, 1832-36, the last of which was accompanied by two letters from Peter Hagner, U.S. Treasury auditor, regarding a Black Hawk War claim. The collection also contains several letters about political matters, including one from Henry Eddy after Harrison's election in 1840, and another by George W. Waters referring to the Mormons in 1842.
