Toy, Thomas D. Papers, 1864-1926 | Illinois History and Lincoln Collections

Thomas D. Toy (1842-1926), born in Pickaway County, Ohio, enlisted from Cazenovia, Woodford County, Ill., in Co. I, 47^th Ill. Vol. Inf. on Sept. 4, 1861. He was engaged in the siege and battle at Corinth and at Vicksburg. Discharged on Mar. 25, 1864, after service as a private and sergeant, he reenlisted as a 2^nd lieutenant in Co. G, 71^st U.S. Inf. (Colored). After the war, he was a blacksmith in Cherryvale, Kansas. When his shop burned down in 1906, it was rebuilt by contributions from over 70 others in the town.

Papers in the collection relate to Toy's military service, including a report of those engaged in guard duty under him, and genealogical data regarding the Toy family. Eckard V. Toy, Jr., of Parkdale, Ore. donated the collection to the Illinois Historical Survey in 2000.
