Scope and Contents:
This collection primarily contains correspondence between Ulysses G. Grant and William Elrod, the manager of Grant's farm in St. Louis County, Mo., where his father-in-law, Frederick F. Dent, lived. The collection also includes an insurance policy for $2,000, taken out by Grant on the farmhouse occupied by Elrod; state and county property tax receipts (1871-73) describing the location of the farm; various newspaper clippings; and a photograph of Grant. The correspondence is published in The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, ed. John Y. Simon.
The Survey acquired the collection in 1940.
