Scope and Contents: In 1835, Matthias Lane Dunlap moved from New York to LaSalle Co., Ill. He later became involved in various business and farming activities in Cook Co. and developed one of the most extensive horticultural nurseries in the West. Dunlap also served in the General Assembly and was a deputy county surveyor. In 1857, he moved to Champaign Co., Ill., where he continued his nursery business and wrote as an agricultural correspondent for two Chicago newspapers. The journal is a book of land surveys which he kept in his capacity as deputy county surveyor in Cook Co.
