Facts and Figures

Do you want to know the figures on airline on-time performance and reasons for delays?  Perhaps you are looking for information on Canada's national medical expenditures?  How about a table ranking the perceived corruption in various countries?  We have linked several types of resources providing facts and figures to answer these information needs and much more below.

International Statistical Resources

UIUC LogoProQuest Statistical Insight - Currently a list of international statistical resources can be found by simple clicking on “EU countries” under “Statistics in the News”.  If you know what you are looking for, go to the search.

United Nations Statistical Databases - the overarching repository for international statistics gathered by the UN.  You can also find statistics on any of the pages of the 16 Specialized Agencies of the UN.

World Bank Data - This is one of the Specialized Agencies and also one of the most useful resources for international development statistics.

Eurostats - This is a complex site that includes News Releases, Statistics Explained, Statistics by Theme (Subject), and Publications.  A wide variety of statistical reports are available here.  A user wishing to access the a database in order to download specific data must create an account.

UIUC logoOECD iLibrary - This resource provides the ability to browse by theme or country.  It includes books, papers, stats, a fact book, and glossaries and becomes extremely complex the deeper you dig.

International and European Statistical Resources - This site links a number of statistical resources under specific subject areas.

International Statistics by Country - Provides access to the statistical offices of a large number of countries.  Most are in the vernacular language, and many have links to an English version in some areas.

World Data Center - This highly recommended site from Columbia University "provides access to a wide range of global data, associated documentation, and visualization and analysis tools, and to the community of experts on global data."

Public Opinion

Eurobarometer - The results of standard, special and flash opinion polls in the EU can be found here.

Latinobarómetro - Provides public opinion polling from 18 Latin American countries.

Pew Global Attitudes Project - New collection of opinion both by and toward the U.S.

Roper Center for Public Opinion - Although primarily U.S. focused, there is a growing body of international opinion here.

Miscellaneous Sources for Facts

Data.gov - A variety of datasets from the United States Government.

Gapminder - Hans Rosling's visually stimulating site of world socio-economic data results complete with lectures on the results of applications of the data including "Africa is not a country" provide a fascinating glance into the uses of data in policy-making.

Wolfram Alpha - "Computational Knowledge Engine"

World Treaty Index - The Center for the Study of Complex Systems at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has released a beta version of a database that is hoped to someday contain every known international agreement in the 20th century.  It includes very good instructions for using the site and can calculate histograms, merge with other datasets, and download all or part of the data in .CSV format.
