Course Reserves

The History, Philosophy and Newspaper Library (HPNL) accepts reserve lists of monographs and printed course packs for all courses in history and philosophy. The Undergraduate Library also accepts reserve lists for all courses and is further responsible for creating E-Reserves.

To place items on reserve at HPNL, please email or send a typed list of reserve readings with author, title, and publisher specified to Mary Stuart . Call numbers are not necessary. Please include a syllabus so we can help your students in case of problems.

To ensure the materials you assign will be on reserve in time, please submit your requests by the following deadlines:

These deadlines allow us time to recall materials that may be charged out or order copies of items that are currently unavailable in the UIUC libraries. Reserve lists turned in after the deadlines will be processed in order of receipt and materials may not be available by the time classes start.

Please limit your reserve lists to required readings and modest amounts of supplementary materials. As space and staff time is limited, we must focus on supplying reserve access to what everyone in your class is responsible for reading.

Only library materials owned by the University of Illinois campuses can be placed on reserve. Books from other institutions cannot be placed on reserve per consortial agreements. Of course, students in your class may request copies from other institutions for their own use.

Photocopies of articles and book chapters must be scanned and placed on E-Reserves through processing overseen by the Undergraduate Library .

Library Instruction

HPNL offers course-related instruction in the use of the Library’s resources on request. Any instructor teaching a course involving historical research or the use of resources found in HPNL can request a customized library session for the class. Instruction sessions cover print and digital resources and resource methods tailored to the course content. To request a library instruction session for your class, please contact Mary Stuart .

NOTE: Please allow us at least two weeks’ advance preparation time; requests with less than two weeks’ notice cannot normally be accommodated. Most instructors request sessions early in the semester, so the earlier you place your request, the more likely it can be scheduled when you need it.

Visit the Central Circulation website for information about courtesy cards, bookstack access, carrels, off campus borrowing, library cards, photocopies, pickups, returns, renewals, saves, searches, and contact information.

Photocopying

Photocopy machines are available throughout the Main Library, including the History, Philosophy, and Newspaper Library. Photocopies cost 15 cents per page by coin or 9 cents per page using photocopy or I-Cards. Photocopy cards are available at the circulation desk on the second floor of the Main Library and in the Undergraduate Library. The photocopy card dispenser accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills, but not coins.  Click here for a list of photocopiers in the Library.
