When the western part of the United States was first described by explorers, it was defined as a great desert with little hope to ever truly inhabit. With new practices in irrigation, the discovery of gold and the intrigue of exploring and taming a new land, the western United States began to develop. Manipulating water became the key to making such a land hospitable to settlement.
