Saturday, November 14th, 1-5pm. Library National Gaming Event at the Undergraduate Library
On Saturday, November 14th from 1pm until 5pm, the Undergraduate Library will
be joining libraries across the country to host a gaming event as part of the American Library
Association's National Gaming Day. Students can play games from the Undergraduate Library collection on a
variety of contemporary and vintage gaming consoles. Individual and group games (like Rock Band) will be available.
Learn game design! A student-led workshop on basic computer graphics design for gaming
will be held from (1:00 - 2:30) in room 295 of the Undergrad Library during National Gaming
Day. This
workshop will focus on using OpenGL to create and manipulate basic shapes, and will also
feature using voice commands to interact with them. There will also be time for general
questions about video game design. The workshop is led by Brandon Smith, who's been
developing games as a hobby since high school, and currently works as a graphics programmer for the
Energy Bioscience Institute at the University of Illinois.
Participants should bring a laptop to the workshop. Prior to the
workshop, it is useful to install Visual C++
(http://www.microsoft.com/Express/VC/) on your
laptop. The focus will
be on using Windows-based tools. Other requirements include the Microsoft Speech API
for the final part of the tutorial, which can also be downloaded during the tutorial.
