How long does it take to get materials through Interlibrary Loan?
Requests for articles are generally filled within 10 working days, and book requests within 2-3 weeks. However, these times may vary based on the specific circumstances, so you should check with the Interlibrary Loan office. If you cannot wait 10 days for a journal article, please speak to the Funk ACES Library's reference staff.
Who is allowed to use Interlibrary Loan and how much does it cost?
All faculty, staff or students at UIUC can use Interlibrary Loan. The Library currently usually absorbs all the Interlibrary Loan costs, so you don't need to pay anything. There is, however, a fee for certain services such as Rush service, Dissertation Express, and Doc Express.
How do I request articles and non-book materials through Interlibrary Loan?
You can request articles and non-book materials with the web forms provided by Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan provides separate forms for loan and photocopy requests. It is best to fill out the fields with as much information as you can provide. This is particularly true for required fields (marked by an asterisk): title and author for book requests, journal title, article authors, article title, volume, year and page numbers for photocopy requests. If you do not have some of the required information it is acceptable to fill it in with "unknown". However, filling out the form with the most complete citation possible will speed the process along.
There is also a separate form for UIUC Doc Express, which is a fee-based service that collects and delivers journal articles housed on campus.
You must be affiliated with the University of Illinois to access these services and will be required to log in with your NetID and password.
Interlibrary Loan will not fulfill your request if a copy is available at any UIUC library or online. Feel free to ask the reference staff if you have any questions about placing a request.
A journal is in binding. How can I get an article from that journal?
Many journals are now available online, through the UIUC Library's Online Research Resources. Simply type the name of the journal you are looking for into the search box. If the University does not have online access to the journal, you may be able to obtain a copy by making an Interlibrary Loan request either on WorldCat or through the UIUC Interlibrary Loan website.
A book is currently checked out. Can I request it through Interlibrary Loan?
First, you should check the Online Catalog to be sure no additional UIUC copies are available. If the book is available through another library in the Online Catalog, you can go to the departmental library where it is held or click the "Request" link to have the book delivered to a more convenient library branch (staff and faculty may also request delivery of books to their offices by choosing the Campus Mail option).
Next, check to see if the item is available from another Illinois academic library. In order to so you will have to search the I-Share catalog for the title of interest. Once located, click on the "Request" link.
When requesting materials via I-Share or the UIUC Online Catalog, you will need to log in using the following information: the 14 digit library number located on your I-card, your last name, and your home library (UIUC). As with UIUC requests, you may select a pick up location at any campus library or, for faculty and staff, delivery to your campus address. An e-mail will be sent to indicate your request is ready for pickup.
If the book you need is not available at UIUC or through I-Share, you can use WorldCat to locate and request the title. After searching for and locating the title you need, click on "Request a loan" under External Resources. You will have to log in with your netID and password.
For books not available at UIUC or through I-Share, you may also place a request through Interlibrary Loan using the request form for books.
Please feel free to ask the reference staff for assistance with any of these options.
Can I borrow theses or dissertations through Interlibrary Loan?
Many theses and dissertations are available online through ProQuest Digital Dissertations. Dissertations written for the ACES college are available in print at the Funk ACES Library and can be searched using the ACES Thesis Database.
Theses and dissertations may also be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, but their availability may be limited since many institutions do not let them circulate. The request process is the same as for books, as described above.
Many Ph.D. dissertations are available through UMI for a $15 fee. These dissertations are available within 4-5 working days, and circulate for a month. To request dissertations through this service, you must make your request in person at room 104A in the Main Library and pay the fee at that time.
Please refer to the "Frequently Asked Questions" file at the Interlibrary Loan site for additional information, or contact the Funk Reference Staff.
