There are currently 39 workstations available in the Funk ACES Library for accessing the I-Share Catalog, the Library Gateway, the UIUC Online Library Catalog and the Internet.
What is the I-Share Catalog and how do I access it?
The I-Share Catalog is a networked database of materials held by CARLI, a group of over 60 libraries in Illinois. Using I-Share, you may search for material held at all of these libraries, and place a request for the material. These materials include books, films, slides, documents, journals and magazines (though specific articles are not searchable through I-Share). The I-Share Catalog contains bibliographic information such as author, title, publisher, and year for most of these materials. It also contains the call number and location of these materials.
Please refer to the Circulation FAQ for additional information about borrowing materials from Illinet.
Who can show me how to use the online catalog?
Librarians at the Funk ACES Library often teach patrons how to use the online catalog. In addition, librarians at other UIUC libraries can give instruction, and the University Library often schedules workshops on the use of library resources. If you have any questions, please ask the reference staff for assistance.
Help may be found within the online catalog. UIUC also offers real-time online help services at the "Ask A Librarian" website.
How do I find out if the Funk ACES Library has a certain book or journal?
To find a specific book or journal, you should consult the Online Catalog. Start with "Quick Search." Under the "Search By" menu, choose the "Start of Title" or "Start of Journal/Magazine Title" option. Then, enter the first few words of the title exactly, excluding any initial articles.
To find out where a particular item in your search is located, click on its title and scroll toward the bottom of the page. Holdings information begins below the horizontal gray line, and lists institution, branch location, call number, copy number, and availability.
If you are only interested in Funk ACES Library materials, you can further limit your search by choosing ACES in the "Quick Limit" drop down menu.
You can also search by author, subject, or any word anywhere in an item's record. These options are all available in the "Search by" drop down menu.
If you would like to search by more than one type of information at one time (e.g., title and author), try using the Advanced Search.
If you still can't find the title, please ask the reference staff for assistance. They will be happy to help you.
The Library Gateway is a web presence that gathers together all the online electronic resources available through the UIUC libraries. By organizing these resources, the UIUC libraries hope to facilitate our patrons’ research.
What electronic databases are available? How do I access them?
The library offers many electronic databases that members of the UIUC community can access through our Online Research Resources. A link to this page appears on the Library Gateway and on any site that includes the UIUC Library navigation bar (as at the top of the Funk ACES Library home page).
If you are interested in topics specific to ACES, you can consult the Funk ACES Library's home page, which provides "Useful Links by ACES Department" and "Major Research Databases for finding journal articles".
Which database should I use for my research?
If you are an undergraduate doing general research in agriculture or other areas of the life sciences, then you should start your search with the Expanded Academic ASAP (Infotrac) or Academic Search Premier.
If you are doing more specific research, then you should begin your search on Agricola or CAB Abstracts.
If you are doing specific research on businesses, marketing or advertising in agriculture, you may want to start with ABI/Inform or Business Source Premier.
If you are doing specific research on food science and technology, researchers can begin their searches on Agricola or on FSTA (Food Science and Technology Abstracts).
If you are doing specific research on topics related to the environment, ecology, or forestry, begin your searching in Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management Database, CAB Abstracts, or Biological Abstracts (BIOSIS).
On the Funk ACES Library homepage, you can also find a list of more article databases arranged by subject area.
Please remember that these are only general guidelines. Whenever you need help with a search, or suggestions on where to begin, please consult the reference staff.
