This dictionary has over 11,000 entries and focuses on concepts, strategies and methodologies related to ecology, evolution, and systematics. The second edition has been updated to include terms related to molecular biology techniques, biological diversity, ecotoxicology and environmental pollution. Included are twenty-nine appendices which provide a wide range of information such as: Latin abbreviations, geological time scales, marine depth zones, SI units, and acronyms. The definitions provided are brief and some knowledge of basic biology is assumed. The dictionary should be a useful reference tool for both students and researchers. (credit Pamela Scales)

Definitions to over 6,000 terms used in the interdisciplinary study of natural resource management are provided. The book's wide scope covers forest industry terminology (clam bunk skidder), biological (megagametophyte) and geological (mesa) terms, as well as terms particular to resource management (visual impact assessment, watershed restoration, etc.). Definitions are clearly written and not too brief. Included are many excellent black and white illustrations. Entry words are capitalized and in bold, making it easy to find terms when scanning down the page.
Multiple meanings and spellings of words, as well as cross references are included where relevant. (credit Pamela Scales)

Ecological Census Techniques
Author/Editor: Sutherland, William J.
Published: Cambridge : Cambridge University Press,
1996.
Call #: 574.5028 EC73
Location: Biology (Stacks)
Ecological Census Techniques describes methods for the enumeration of many different kinds of organisms. The book is arranged primarily by taxonomic group, heavily favoring the animal kingdom. It also includes a 100-page chapter on basic techniques, a chapter on measuring environmental variables and the final chapter is a list of "the twenty commonest censoring sins." Although it has been criticized for its lack of inclusion of spatial pattern analysis methods and for its bias towards animals, it should prove a useful compilation volume for students and researchers. The excellent organization of the book, with a detailed table of contents, good use of section headings, "box" examples, figures, and a comprehensive index, makes it easy to use. This four volume guide provides information on plants and
animals that are on the U.S. federal endangered species list. The first two volumes
describe species that were listed as of August 1989. Volume 1 addresses the plants and
mammals and Volume 2 addresses birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, mussels, crustaceans,
snails and insects. Volume 3 addresses species added to the list between August 1989 and
December 1991 and includes a state-by-state listing of newly added species and an account
of the recovery status of listed species (whether they are improving,
declining, etc.). Volume 4 includes species added to the list between December 1991 and
July 1994 including a very large number of Hawaiian species. Within each volume the
species are listed by category and then alphabetically by scientific name - an index of
common and scientific names is provided and common names are also listed in the indexes at
the back of each volume.
Entries include a photograph (some are in color), a description, and information on the habitat, historic range, current distribution, and recovery and conservation (which explains causes for a species decline and what, if anything, is being done about it) for each species. Bibliographic references and contact information (usually the appropriate office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) are also included. (credit Pamela Scales)
