ABOUT THE ENGLISH LIBRARY

The English Library serves the Departments of English and the Unit for Cinema Studies. Its patrons include undergraduate majors, graduate students, and faculty members, as well as national and international scholars attracted by the strength of the collections. The English Library welcomes local residents involved in literature and the performing arts.

The English Library contains about 35,000 volumes and comprises a core collection and bibliographic research center for the disciplines that it serves. The English Library collection includes current issues of several hundred periodical titles; an in-depth reference section for bibliographies, dictionaries, indexes, writing manuals, concordances, and histories; and a circulating collection of critical and historical scholarship. The English Library also acquires material as part of the Medieval Studies Program Library Resources group. The English Library collects works related to several major literary figures including Shakespeare, John Milton, H.G. Wells and others, complementing special collections held by the Rare Books Room. The Main Library holds an additional 700,000 volumes covering all areas of English and American literature, and cinema theory and history. Together these collections form one of the country's most important resources for literature and the performing arts.

The English Library is a member of the Arts and Humanities Division of the Library.

The English Library is staffed by Kathleen M. Kluegel (English Librarian), R. Cagle (Cinema Studies and Media Services Specialist), Connie Santarelli (Library Technical Specialist), and Harriett Green (Graduate Assistant).

English Library books circulate for 4 weeks (undergraduates and non-library staff) or 16 weeks (faculty and graduate students), bound periodicals for 2 days (faculty and graduate students), and reserve items for 2 hours or overnight. Reference books and current issues of periodicals do not circulate.

Books may be renewed at the circulation desk or by calling the Library Telephone Center at 217-333-8400. Patrons may also renew or view items checked out, and find out about accumulated fines by clicking "My Account" on the Online Catalog.

The English Library's schedule varies throughout the year. For current hours, please consult the main library schedule.
