GROUP INSTRUCTION:

What are group instruction sessions?

As a librarian I am charged with ensuring an information literate campus. Group instruction sessions are designed to help students understand how to locate, evaluate and access information needed to produce research of the highest quality.

What groups are eligible?

I am happy to schedule sessions for any of your classes, which are taught in the psychology department or the school of social work, whether graduate or undergraduate level.

Where do we meet?

Generally, group instruction sessions are held in the Education and Social Science Library. If requested, arrangements can be made to meet in a departmental computer lab or the undergraduate library's computer lab. In special circumstances, other locations on campus may be secured. Note: All arrangements require reasonable advance notice.(suggestion: 3 days)

What's included in the group instruction session?

Any or all of the following are included...

INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS:

Sign up for a Psychology: Individual Research Consultation or Social Work: Individual Research Consultation.

What is an Individual Research Consultation?

It is a one-on-one session with the Psychology & Social Work Librarian and Subject Specialist. (That's me, Allison Sutton)

Who can schedule an Individual Research Consultation?

These sessions are open to psychology and social work graduate students and undergraduate psychology majors. Faculty, PostDocs and Visiting Scholars within the Department of Psychology and the School of Social Work are also welcome to schedule a session with Allison.

Why consider an Individual Consultation?

UIUC's psychology and social work programs have outstanding national reputations and are quite challenging! Navigating UIUC's massive library system, which is one of the largest in the country, can be daunting as well. It is important to me that you know I am willing to help you in order to ensure the successful completion of your degree.

The purpose and the plan:

The intention is to teach you how to navigate the library's many resources and services. It is tailored to suit your specific research needs. After discussing (via email) your research agenda and process, I will develop a plan for our session. The plan will further develop your library research skill set, while teaching you a few time saving strategies and techniques.

What specifics will be covered in this session?

That depends on what you know, what you've already done and what I think you are missing. We will use sources with which you are likely already familiar and also tap some you have not touched. Provided above, in the group instruction section, are examples of what may be covered in a typical individual consultation session, however, each are designed to suit each your own research needs.

Psychology or Social Work students or faculty should not hesitate to contact me. A three day advanced notice is strongly encouraged. This will allow for better preparation on my part and a more productive meeting.
