Two types of reference sources have been developed by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements to provide access to published tests:

I. The Mental Measurement Yearbooks

Mental Measurement Yearbook Online contains recent descriptive information and reviews of tests from MMY's 9th edition to present. MMY Online provides easy access to multiple volumes of MMY and includes full-text entries. Additionally, MMY Online is updated every six months adding new test descriptions and reviews.

All editions of the MMY are available in print in the Education and Social Science Library's Reference Collection, Call Number 016.153M528:

  • MMY 1(1938)
  • MMY 2 (l940)
  • MMY 3 (1949)
  • MMY 4 (1953)
  • MMY 5 (1959)
  • MMY 6 (1965)
  • MMY 7 (1972)
  • MMY 8 (1978)
  • MMY 9 (1985)
  • MMY 10 (1989)
  • MMY 11 (1992)
  • MMY 12 (1995)
  • MMY 13 (1998)
  • MMY 14 (2001)
  • MMY 15 (2003)
  • MMY 16 (2005)
  • MMY 17 (2007)

These contain reviews of tests on all topics, in English, in print at the time of each MMY's publication. The main body of each volume consists of encyclopedic style entries with test titles in alphabetical order. In addition to tests and their reviews, each edition contains a list of contributing test reviewers; index of titles; index of acronyms; classified subject index; publishers directory and index; and index of authors' names.

With the publications of MMY 9, a score index was added to successive volumes. This acts as a detailed subject index to the contents of each test. Since test scores frequently provide the operational definition of the variables dealt with in each test, the score index provides the most adequate description of the individual test.

MMY's and their Supplements are scheduled to appear in alternating years. The Supplement is a non- comprehensive edition of test reviews which includes a bibliography of recently published tests, test reviews and bibliographies of references for specific tests. In addition, the Supplement contains a publisher's index and directory; name, title and score indexes; and an index of acronyms.

Electronic Index to Mental Measurements Yearbooks

Buros Institute Test Reviews Online is a searchable database that indexes reviews of over 4,000 commercially available tests. Database records will provide the citation and location of reviews in the MMYs.

II. Tests in Print VII (T7), 2006 (016.37126B93t2006)

Contains a cumulative index to the first 16 MMYs. Also reviews over 2,939 tests that were new or revised after the publication of MMY 15, but before the publication of MMY16.

How to Use Tests in Print

I. To find information on a known test

Look in the "Index of Titles" for your test title. Numbers refer to test entry number in the main body of TIP. Also listed in the Index of Titles are tests which appeared in earlier MMY or TIP volumes.

Tests in Print may not contain the most recent information available on a particular test. Check subsequent MMY editions for more recent information.

II. To find tests on a particular topic

Use the "Classified Subject Index" to choose the appropriate topic or category. Under each section will be a listing of test titles and test entry numbers. Also consult the "Score Index," which indicates the specific characteristic or attribute each test measures.

III. If you know the name of the author or reviewer of a test

Find the author's or reviewer's name in the "Index of Names". Entry numbers for tests, reviews, or references are given after each name.
