A SELECTIVE GUIDE TO REFERENCE BOOKS IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE IN THE LIBRARY SCIENCE LIBRARY

Education and Social Science Library
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

EDX DOES NOT MAINTAIN THIS PAGE.  THE LIBRARY SCIENCE LIBRARY DOES.   THIS IS NOT THE LATEST VERSION!

At the University of Illinois, the resources for the study of children's literature are simply superb. The following brief guide is intended to show only the range of reference materials in the Library Science Library. Depending on the nature of one's interests, one may also need to consult the bibliographical tools of the Reference Room, explore the main stacks (where, among other things, there is an extensive collection of juvenile catalogs of American public libraries from the turn of the century), visit the Rare Book Room, or follow up leads in other departmental libraries, such as Education, English, Modern Languages, and History.

The staff of the Education Library, for example, have produced handouts on such topics as Little Golden Books, Aesop's fables, Dr. Seuss books, alphabet books, pop-up books, wordless picture books, and Newbery medal books. The "S-Collection," located in Room 106 in the Education Library, consists of over 41,000 volumes of works written for children and young adults. Materials from 1800 to the present are included (some unique materials are kept in the Rare Book Room). Also of interest in the Education Library is a facsimile series of selected early English children's books from the Osborne Collection of the Toronto Public Library.

The Center for Children's Books (51 Gerty Drive, Room 19) is another outstanding resource. Founded in 1945, the Center has over 10,000 volumes written for children and a reference collection of over 800 volumes. A non-circulating library, the Center for Children's Books collection is cataloged by author, title, subject, curricular use, developmental values, appeals, grade level, and type of literature. The Center also publishes the monthly Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. As the depository library for books reviewed in the Bulletin, the CCB receives the most recently published children's trade books.

The field is vast and life is short. This guide is designed to be useful to those interested in the historical and critical study of children's literature. It is hoped that it will allow readers to spend less time searching and more time reading. Arrangement is under the following headings:
