MISSION

The Education and Social Science Library (ESSL) provides consistent, high quality research and instructional services to students and faculty in the College of Education, the School of Social Work, and the Departments of Anthropology, Gender & Women's Studies, Geography and Geographic Information Science, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology, as well as to other members of the community. ESSL develops and maintains subject-specific and special collections in a variety of formats to support the present and future information needs of these programs and related departments. Using an array of technologies and resources, ESSL serves as a gateway to information for researchers on campus and at a distance. In conjunction with the mission of the University and Library policies, ESSL extends its collections and services to individuals in the State of Illinois and beyond.

 

COLLECTION

The Education and Social Science Library contains over 145,000 books, nearly 1,500 serial titles and 557,000 micro-forms in the areas of anthropology, Asian American studies, education, gender and women's studies, geography, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology.

 

PHYSICAL SETTING

The Education and Social Science Library is made of several separate rooms. Room 100 houses reference and reserve materials, periodicals, staff offices, photocopiers, and library catalog terminals . Room 112 contains the circulating book collection, and the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF). Room 104 houses current materials in the Curriculum Collection and Room 106 contains current materials in the School Collection (S-Collection). Please see this map for additional information. Microform readers are located in the hallway which connects Room 100 and Room 104. The General Information page includes more history and background about the library and its many collections. In addition, the UIUC Office of Publications and Marketing has prepared general information sheets about the campus and and its distinctive qualities.

 

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

ESSL maintains a number of special collections which relate to the Library's primary disciplines. These include: Arms Control, Children's/Young Adult Lit (S-Collection), Curriculum Collection, HRAF, Mandeville Collection, and Tests.

 

VIRTUAL EXHIBITS

The Education and Social Science Library occasionally features online exhibitions of its collections.  These displays are viewable through our Virtual Exhibits page.
