Welcome! This site has been created to assist you in exploring library resources for your research for Psychology/Asian American Studies 470. Our library is one of the largest in the world and it can be a bit overwhelming at first. We will try to make things a little easier for you, but don't hesitate to ask questions.
We have over 40 departmental libraries on our campus. The libraries you will find most important for this class are the Education and Social Science Library and the Undergraduate Library. The Education and Social Science Library is located in the Main Library building. You might also hear it referred to as the Graduate Library, but that's a misnomer, so don't let it stop you from coming in here and taking advantage of the resources we can provide. It's your library, too!

Location - in which library the item is kept (or libraries, if we have multiple copies)Hint: Catalogs are used for two purposes: (1) If you know exactly what you are looking for - an exact title or author - you can use the catalog to locate your material (this works for book titles and journal titles); (2) You can also use catalogs to discover material that might be helpful to you by doing subject and keyword searching.
Call Number - this number is essential for finding the item on the shelf
Status - is it available for you to check out?
Plan out your search statement.
Search the database and evaluate the results.
Find journal articles(if full text wasn't available online).
If the article is not available in full-text, and the database does not have Check Your Library, find the journal call number by using the Library Catalog "Quick Search:"
If the item you need is not available through UIUC, use the online Interlibrary Loan request services
Directions:
To extract data that are specific to one Asian ethnic group, go to the US Census Bureau's home page. You will see on the left side frame a link to American FactFinder. American FactFinder is an interactive tool that allows you to select and extract specific sets of information that are available from the decennial Census (2000 is the most recent), American Community Survey (2006 is the most recent), and other data collected by the Census Bureau.
To find a population estimate of a specific racial/ethnic group, you can select American Community Survey from the link "Data Sets" on the left side frame, mark 2006 American Community Survey (or select Decennial Census, and mark 2000 Census, if you prefer to work with the Census data), then click on "Selected Population Profiles." The page refreshes to an interactive screen with a pull-down menu where you enter your selections. (For example, you can select the default option "Nation" as your geographical area and click the "add" button, then click "Show result" button. The next page is where you make your selection of your "race or ethnic groups" or "ancestry group" on the pull-down menu and clik "Show result" button. The FactFinder will then take a few moments to compute the data that you asked for.)
There are many other useful features in the FactFinder. Leave yourself ample time to become familiar and to experiment with this web-based research tool.
