This guide focuses on core anthropology resources, most of which are located in the Education and Social Science Library (ESSL). All titles are shelved in the ESSL reference collection, unless otherwise noted. Access to most of the online resources listed is restricted to the UIUC Community.

Depending on their area of interest, anthropology researchers may also want to consult other campus libraries including Biology, Art and Architecture, Modern Languages, Funk ACES, Music, Geology, History, or one of the area studies libraries (e.g., Africana or Asian).

The second edition of this text is intended to facilitate library research by identifying, synthesizing, and organizing the extensive body of print and online resources relevant to anthropology.  It is written to assist researchers at all levels in their quest for information relating to sociocultural anthropology.  The text is organized to loosely reflect the structure and areas of interest in the field.  Arrangement within each section is alphabetical by title.  Entries within each section are organized by type of reference source.  Included are author, title, and subject indexes.

Identifies print materials in anthropology, archaeology and related interdisciplinary research areas published in almost 900 journals and monographic series. Coverage of the North American and British literature is nearly exhaustive, and good for core European and Latin American sources.

Provides broad international coverage of the literature of linguistics and related fields. All aspects of the study of language are covered, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. An interdisciplinary index to social science literature that allows you to trace citations made to articles. Human Relations Area Files (HRAF).

A specially organized collection of thousands of full text sources on almost 400 cultures worldwide. HRAF can be useful for anyone looking for background information or specific data on a particular ethnic group, culture or country, as well as by those investigating subject like architecture, kinship, political structure or settlement patterns on a comparative cross-cultural basis.

All HRAF installments published since 1995 are available only via the eHRAF World Cultures, while most older installments are available only in print or microfiche. To check which cultures are covered by HRAF in what formats, see the "Human Relations Files Collection of Ethnography: Collection List For All formats" appended to the print "Guide to the Human Relations Area Files" and available online at http://www.yale.edu/hraf/collections.htm.

This quarterly journal provides "topical syntheses" that "critically assess and integrate research on a specific subject in archaeological method or theory. More than a bibliographic essay, each article establishes a framework for synthesizing findings, provides incisive commentary on previous work, and identifies research priorities." Continues the annual Archaeological Method and Theory, 1989-93 (930.1 Ar2222) and Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory, 1978-88 (913.018Ad9).

Continues Biennial Review of Anthropology, 1959-71 (572 B477).

Chapters by specialists on topics of current interest and varying scope are followed by lengthy bibliographies giving full citations to the writings discussed. International in coverage, but with a high percentage of references in English. An excellent starting point for literature reviews, especially now that it is online and full-text searchable. From volume 1 (1974) to present all four subfields are included.

The 1990 supplement represents a massive update of this classic bibliography, drawing together a large body of literature from diverse sources, including references to published books and articles, as well as government publications (U.S., federal, state, and Canadian), dissertation and theses, ERIC documents, manuscripts and archival documents, and non-print materials (films, maps, etc.) from the 16th century to 1987. Volume one of the 1990 edition includes an overview of 290 ethnic groups in 17 broad regions in North America as well as indexes by author (including primary and secondary authors, editors, and translators), ethnic group and subject. Volumes 2 and 3 contain the actual citations.

Developed by Minnesota State University students, the quality of the entries varies. All entries include a list of references consulted.

Arranged chronologically from William Camden (b.1551-1623) to David Clarke (b. 1938-1976), each entry begins with a brief overview of the archaeologist's main contributions, followed by an in-depth but accessible examination of their life and work. Each entry ends with a list of references which facilitate further study. An index appears at the end of the second volume.

This classic work includes almost 4000 brief biographies of prominent social scientists, mostly from the 19th and early 20th century as only persons deceased at the timing of writing were included. Figures deemed more important have longer entries, but most are quite brief.

Although too dated to be useful as a directory, this continues to be useful as a biographical source with unusually broad international coverage. Volume 18 of this classic reference source includes substantial biographical essays for approximately 600 prominent social scientists and others whose ideas helped shape the social sciences. The biographies are notable for their analytic (as opposed to descriptive) emphasis and include selective bibliographies. No persons born after 1890 are included.

Contains 29 accessible essays describing theory and practice in the field of archaeology as well as summarizing current knowledge within the discipline. Illuminates the ways in which folk crafts, foods, architecture, remedies, customs, holidays, narratives, and speech identify Americans and their way of life. Covers a variety of broad topics such as urban and suburban folklife, ethnic folklife, religious folklife, vernacular or perceptual regions, regional Native American groups, age groups, gender and sexual groups, etc. Entries on particular groups or communities usually include census figures or other survey results and a description of efforts to preserve and promote such communities and their traditions. Each entry contains a list of sources. Volumes conclude with a general index, a cultural group index, and a geographical index.

Contains 1,000 entries on a variety of areas of study, including archaeology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics, as well as articles from related disciplines such as geology, sociology, and philosophy. The articles were written by over 250 international experts in the field. Entries are alphabetical, with the complete list of topics provided at the start of each volume. Suggestions for further reading conclude the articles. Each volume contains an index, and colorful photographs can be found throughout the work.

This two-volume set explores the social and cultural context of medical beliefs and practices. The first volume contains 53 essays on topics related to general medical concepts and perspectives; medical systems, political, economic, and social issues, sexuality, reproduction, and the life cycle, and health conditions and diseases. The second volume provides portraits of health and illness in 52 cultures from around the world, with every cultural region and varied levels of complexity represented. Each chapter includes a list of references, the first volume begins with a glossary, and the second volume contains a subject index.

The Encyclopedia of the Peoples of the World. 1993.

This encyclopedia gives short descriptions of ethnic groups, including their geography, language, religion, history. Extinct or assimilated ethnic groups are not included. Populations of nation states, such as England or Nigeria ("English" and "Nigerians"), are given separate entries, as are ethnic groups within these nation states. Includes maps and other illustrations.

This set, prepared in conjunction with Human Relation Area Files (HRAF), includes basic information on all archaeologically known cultures, and is intended to provide a basis for comparative research. The eight volumes cover different regions of the world (e.g., Africa or Oceania). Entries provide an overview of major archaeological traditions highlighting subsistence practices, sociopolitical organization, and material industries. All entries are written by prominent anthropologists and include bibliographies. Useful chronologies are provided at the front and detailed indices at the back of the last volume. A cumulative index is also provided in volume 9.

This outstanding reference source provides lengthy descriptions, written by prominent scholars, of thousands of cultural and ethnic groups. The ethnographic summaries cover demography, linguistic affiliation, history and cultural relations, settlements, economy, kinship, marriage and family, sociopolitical organization, religion, and expressive culture. Each entry provides a short bibliography of key sources for further research. Each volume covers a specific geographic area and includes maps, a list of films, and a very helpful ethnonym index that cross-references alternate names and the names of related groups and subgroups. Detailed cumulative indexes and a glossary are provided in Vol. 10, and each volume is prefaced with maps showing the distribution of cultural groups.

Defines the terms and techniques of archaeology and describes the major premises, important concepts, and scientific methods used in the field. Provides a very good balance of New World and Old World Coverage. With a total of 7,000 entries, it is the largest and most comprehensive dictionary of its kind. Includes archaeological abbreviations, a bibliography, supplementary list of archaeological sites and terms, and a section on "writing and archaeology" which provides a timeline of the development of writing systems worldwide.

The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Love, Courtship, and Sexuality through History.  2008.

This 6 volume set explores the ideas, attitudes, and practices of institutions, legislation, religious belief, art, and literature, as well as important individuals and ideas, relating to various aspects of love, courtship, and sexuality.  Each volume represents a different historical period.  Individual volumes include a selected bibliography, some arranged by culture, an index, and information about contributors.  Each entry also includes suggestions for further reading.
