HIST 298E: War on the Home Front in 20th Century America
General Sources
Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government
Printing Office, 1895 - (015.73Un35 in the GovDocs Library)
This index, as its name implies, is a monthly compilation of all documents sent to federal
depository libraries. There are compiled indexes for the years 1900-1970 and in four to five
year increments after 1970. These compilations are shelved with the Monthly
Catalog. Online versions of this index are available but do not start coverage until the
late 1970s. Locate documents by title in the
UIUC online catalog or card catalog.
The National Security Archive compiles collections of declassified documents using the Freedom
of Information Act. Many of their collections are about foreign relations, but some are on
topics like national security or the intelligence community. Documents are available online
in PDF format.
Legislative Sources
U.S. Serial Set (congressional documents and reports)
This compilation of congressional publications is available in microfiche in the Government
Documents Library through the 60th Congress (1909). Later volumes are available on the first
level of the Main Stacks. Many reports to Congress by federal agencies and other
organizations are also included. The Serial Set is indexed online in
Lexis-Nexis Congressional,
and in print in the
CIS U.S. Serial Set Index (015.73 C759 in the GovDocs Library).
Congressional Hearings
Congressional committees ask experts on current issues and controversies to testify about their
areas of expertise. Transcripts of their testimony, as well as written material that the
witnesses submit to the committees, are compiled into hearing transcripts. Hearings are
indexed in the CIS U.S. Congressional Committee Hearings Index (015.73C497 in the GovDocs Library),
as well as online in
Lexis-Nexis
Congressional. Locate documents at UIUC using the
online catalog or card catalog.
NOTE: Many congressional sources refer to the number of the Congress that generated a document
rather than date of the document. To translate from Congress to date, see
Session
Dates of Congress, from the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.

and 1932. Documents can be located in the
UIUC online catalog by title or in the card
catalog. For later executive branch publications, use the Monthly Catalog, described
above.
