Abstract: Assisting students to become digitally literate should be an important goal in our teaching. To help with the process there are many visual and digital repositories with learning objects and images one can access. Examples of these resources, as well as other library tips, will be showcased.

Using SplashCast to Create Your Own Free Media Channel

Abstract: Learn how to use SplashCast, an open source, web based product that allows users to create streaming media channels that combine photos, videos, PowerPoint presentations, PDF documents, Podcasts, Vodcasts, radio broadcasts, tutorials, and music. This is also a social networking tool where others can comment on your videos, add them to blogs or web pages, or interface with Facebook and Myspace. Users can also subscribe to SplashCast channels to get updates when new videos are added to your channel. All of which allows you to live where your students live!

The Librarian's Corner and Other Embedded Library Resources in the CMS

Abstract: "What began as librarians working to embed library resources into Web CT has evolved into a partnership with The Educational Technology department to help train librarians and faculty to go beyond simply providing library links. Librarians are being trained to create learning modules, to teach faculty how to create persistent URLs and to be present in their faculty's online courses. Progress is also being made on creating a public area so that librarians can store learning modules that can be "grabbed" by faculty and placed in their courses. Librarians are also creating the "Librarian's Corner, a learning module that is a part of the online course. The "Librarian's Corner" guides students through the research process for that particular subject area. It can be basic or advanced. The value is that it is present within the course space and always available to the student. The librarian tailors the information for that particular course (usually using preexisting Web pages from the library site and modifying them)  while using a template for "The Librarian's Corner."The basic "Librarian's Corner" can be a place that students click on to see the librarian; to get the contact information or a few relevant library links; a place to chat with the librarian; or to learn what's new at the library."

Faculty and Library Collaboration in Illinois Compass

Abstract:

Illinois Compass is already being extensively used at the University of Illinois as thousands of students use it everyday to take quizzes and assessments. Compass also lets section instructors post relevant course materials and links to other resources within the course homepage. However, for many courses, students have to access the library resources for more in-depth understanding of the material.

Lori Mestre, a Digital Learning Librarian here at the University, is working on integrating the necessary library resources and learning modules directly into Compass. The rationale here is that students will benefit from having all the relevant library material packaged nicely into their Compass course web site. In addition, the contact information of the department library liaison would be posted so students could get all the help they need.

Melody Allison is an Assistant Librarian in the Biology Department. She discusses the possibility of integrating library resources within the Biology Department into Compass. She stresses that these resources need to be integrated at the point of need. Since students usually physically travel to the library from another wired location (typically their dorm or apartment), this expenditure of time and effort can be avoided by having all this information in Compass. She also offers a guided tour of the various ways in which she has integrated Biology Learning Modules and resources into her Compass web site.

Robert Baird is the Senior Coordinator of Instructional Development for CITES EdTech and Assistant Professor of Cinema; at this session he demonstrates the various ways in which content can be implemented into Compass, from simple html linking to RSS feeds and shared templates.
