Most databases identify "legitimate" users by the IP address of the computer from which they are
logging in. Any computer connected to the campus network should be covered within the campus IP
range and allowed into the databases with no problem. The Proxy Server is the web server that
allows users off campus to connect to our subscription databases. The Proxy Server acts by
redirecting all communication with the database through the server, housed at UIUC. Users log in,
using their campus NET ID and password and the server authenticates them to the database. The URLs
for the databases are modified in a particular way to allow this to happen.
While most URL's displayed within the databases have the proxy server prefix/suffix, article
records emailed from the databases may not have the correct format.
View the following pages to learn how to attach a proxy prefix to a url you find within one
of the library databases or the library catalog.
