TitleLetter from Abraham Lincoln to Jesse K. Dubois
Coverage / YearAugust 19, 1856
DescriptionLetter from Abraham Lincoln to Jesse K. Dubois, one of Lincoln's neighbors in Springfield, concerning the presidential election. DuBois served with Lincoln as Whig in the Illinois General Assembly, and in 1865, Lincoln recommended DuBois for Illinois State Auditor, a position he held for eight years. This letter was given to the University of Illinois as a gift of Leonora H. Watts, a 1919 University of Illinois graduate, who specified that it be placed in the Sandburg Collection. The letter reads: Springfield, Aug. 19, 1856 Dear Dubois: Your letter on the same sheet with Mr. Miller's is just received. I have been absent four days. I do not know when your court sits. Trumbull has written the Committee here to have a set of appointments made for him commencing here in Springfield, on the 11th of Sept., and to extend throughout the south half of the State. When he goes to Lawrenceville, as he will, I will strain every nerve to be with you and him. More than that I cannot promise now. Yours as truly as ever, A. Lincoln. (Text copied from The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, II, p.360, R.P. Basler, Editor, M.D. Pratt & L.A. Dunlap, Assistant Editors, Rutgers UP, NJ, 1953).
InterpretationIn this letter to one of his Springfield neighbors, Lincoln promises to return from Washington whenever he can to be of service to help support the new Republican Party and its presidential nominee, John C. Fremont. Though Fremont was defeated by James Buchanan, the new Republican Party scored significant victories in Illinois.
