Buggy rims
Title
Buggy
rims
Coverage / Year
1914 to 1920s
Description
These are
three
half
buggy
rims
attached
to a
slat
for
transportation
and
storage.
They are
tacked
to the
slat
across
the
ends
and are
chamfered
except
where
eight
evenly
spaced
holes
are
drilled.
The
slat
originally
had
four
rims
attached
but
one
is
missing.
Interpretation
Many
times
a
broken
wagon
or
buggy
wheel
could
not be
repaired
and
it
had to be
completely
replaced.
Blacksmiths
put
together
separate
pieces
to
make
a
new
wheel
in an
activity
called
wheelwrighting.
The
buggy
bows
which
were the
half
rims
to a
wheel
, were
made
in a
factory.
The
wood
was
steamed
and then
bended
into a
semi-circle.
Nailing
them to a
slat
kept
their
shape
and
made
them
easy
to
transport.
